During the bulk of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the means to overcome him for good.

When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel is detailed in the stage play The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the children Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how Will was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
