The Trump movement's most telling and defining occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and growing, and recently a study predicted his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, since in theory Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding about him since they are skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in biblical accounts.

The obvious and straightforward reality that the Savior from scripture calls for a kind of extreme compassion centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been inspired to see the steadfast resistance to Trump arise in this past year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts of American history.

America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it special and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus.
