A confidential source has revealed a parliamentary probe that the UK abandoned classified technology allowing the Taliban to locate Afghans who collaborated with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

Person A, called Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to relocate and alter their contact details to avoid detection from militant forces.

MPs are investigating official management of a serious leak of personal details concerning almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to move to the United Kingdom to escape the Taliban.

Data Disclosure Happened

An electronic document including private information, such as identities, addresses and occasionally family information, was inadvertently disclosed by an official employed at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.

The incident came to light in late 2023, when the names of several individuals who had applied to relocate to Britain surfaced on social media.

Consequences of the Data Breach

Initial findings provided to the investigation indicated that at least 49 kin and colleagues of Afghans affected by the breach had been killed.

A legal restriction about the leak was enacted in August 2023 and prevented all details regarding the matter from media reporting until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the aid group she collaborated with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they relocate when possible and changed their mobile numbers. Those were the two main details that, should militant forces obtained these details, would lead to identification and capture,” she said.

Contested Findings

The whistleblower disputed that internal investigation carried out by a former official had been mistaken to state that the possession of the dataset by militant forces was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not confronting the authorities; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

She detailed terrible violence endured by concerned people, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“We have had young kids who have had limbs fractured to force relatives to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
