The vehicles for the 2026 season are set to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly compared to current models.

F1 has introduced the simplified vocabulary that will be used to describe the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The championship is introducing what is arguably the most significant rules overhaul in its competitive history next season, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, requiring key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

During grand prix events, drivers will strategically manage battery power – including during hot laps – to extract the peak lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were undertaken with a mix of viewers, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terms would improve understanding of the main elements of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to render a series of complex new areas of the sport as accessible as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, initial designations for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the moveable wings – have been abandoned in favour of descriptive names that clearly indicate the primary purpose of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that racers will have more power to determine tactics regarding energy deployment, harvesting, and conservation.

The 2026 rules introduce a range of settings that will be shown on TV overlays to improve the viewers' comprehension of the strategic duel.

  • Overtake Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power deployable when a driver is close behind the vehicle in front to execute an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a manual energy deployment from the ERS that can be deployed for offensive or defensive moves. It delivers the driver peak output at the click of a switch.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is restricted.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the front and rear wings adjust their angles – opening on the long straight sections for reduced drag and top speed, and closing in the bends for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: The system can harvest energy with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the end of straights or in certain corners where only partial power is required.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The vehicles for the new era will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is expected to drop by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although teams will undoubtedly recover some as they refine their designs.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The cars will employ adjustable aero systems – both wings will move on the straights to reduce drag and increase straightline speed and click back into place for optimal grip in corners.

Pirelli tyres will continue to use 18-inch rims, but the tyres themselves will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and three centimetres on the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The 2026 engines will have an near-equal balance in energy output by the ICE and the electrical system, up from about 20% electrical under present rules.

The hybrid system is simplified through the elimination of the MGU-H, the sophisticated and pricey unit that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.

Cars will be required to run on 100% sustainable fuel, created from organic sources or lab-created processes.
