The child of previous South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked allegations at the commencement of her trial in the port city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being charged over remarks she published on digital networks in the past during violent protests in South Africa that followed the detention of her dad.

A seven-day period of disorder in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and fire-setting, resulted in at least three hundred killed and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

She has been charged of inciting this violence and confronts accusations of provocation to commit terrorism and public disorder.

Context of the Legal Matter

The protests were concentrated in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the ex-leader's arrest for defying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into claims of corruption while he was serving as president.

The defendant has consistently rejected the allegations against her, with her lawyer in the past labelling the prosecution's evidence as weak.

She has also consistently stated the charges against her were an effort to settle political disputes with her parent after he started his own party and campaigned against the African National Congress.

Backing and Case Arguments

This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial persecution" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A small number of backers from her party, the political party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her father and other organization officials participated in the court sessions inside.

Her legal team has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is inadequate and lacks concrete grounds for a conviction.

Main Aspects of the Legal Proceedings

  • Social media comments from the past form the core of the government's case
  • Deadly unrest in recent years resulted in major deaths and financial losses
  • The defendant faces multiple charges of encouragement to violence
  • Legal proceedings are projected to proceed for several days

The trial continues as all parties present their cases before the judicial authority in what is anticipated to be a highly monitored legal battle with major policy consequences for South Africa.
