No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Security Action on Organized Crime
No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. Over 80 people were arrested.
Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the police operation, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to Rio's airport is seen as the central command of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
State officials stated at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
