Make Time For One Classic Stephen King Cinematic Prior to It: Welcome to Derry's Next Episode
The series Welcome to Derry is filled with connections to Stephen King's extensive collection of tales. Apart from the obvious ties to the original story, the show showcases a direct connection to The Shining via the appearance of a young Dick Hallorann. Now, as the narrative progresses, Welcome to Derry is integrating one more beloved tale from King which merits another look.
The Haunting Tale of The Shawshank Redemption
Although The Shawshank Redemption isn't typically classified as horror, especially in contrast with a lot of the author's additional writing, it remains a gripping story about an innocently imprisoned man condemned to spend the rest of his life in a infamous prison. It is that very institution that becomes important in this context, since Shawshank State Prison possesses considerable lore across King's stories — a tradition which persists within It: Welcome to Derry.

In relation to the series, viewers initially discovered about the prison's involvement from an initial preview for the series, where a correctional transport was seen bearing the title painted on the side. During the second episode, we learn which character is probably destined for Shawshank.
Although it is known he did not responsible for the murders of children initially, the character Hank Grogan (Stephen Rider), father of Ronnie (Amanda Christine), gets taken into custody for the crimes. A teaser for the next episode, "Now You See It," reveals a guard informing Hank in his cell, "Do you know what they do to kiddie killers in Shawshank?"
The Consequences for the Character and Ronnie
Considering that the actual killer in the town is an ancient power originating elsewhere preying on and murdering kids, Hank's prospects of clearing his name do not look good. And even if he does go to Shawshank and the audience don't follow him inside, understanding what is known regarding Shawshank makes it clear that his experience would be far from pleasant.
Crucially, however, this development could threaten Ronnie. Hank is her protector. Horrible things are occurring around Derry which no one, young or old, understands and Ronnie just has her recently formed circle of pals to depend on. She will require her father as the story progresses, but if the prison system plays a role, she could be out of luck.
A single fact is apparent: Hank lacks 28 years to tunnel his way out.
