An Historic Milestone when Rosenior Shatters Barriers

"Rosenior represents a top manager that knows the game back to front, and that's the most important thing.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage player, it would be dishonest if I said this news doesn't move me."

These were the words of Paul Canoville, who made his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench in April 1982.

This week, Chelsea named RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, 41, as their new head coach after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

There have been only 12 of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including individuals in interim positions – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he grew up and played not far from here, he knows this area," continued Canoville.

"When kids observe someone like Liam managing the team they support, a person they can identify with, who's from their ends, from a household that fights for what's right… that's profound and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents an enormous step for the club, for the capital, for every young person dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him what he needs, and let the man do his work."

What Does the Statistics Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach in 1996 thereby becoming the top flight's first black manager.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering English black boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League boss from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of managers of colour throughout English football is matched by a lack of diversity at executive level.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers come from African or Caribbean heritage.

However, analysis by Kick It Out found just 3.2% of executive and leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse communities.

At senior coaching positions, according to data provided by 11 clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of his appointment as a the Chelsea manager, and we want to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists a wealth of ability present within ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches desire a chance to show their capabilities. It is imperative to persist in striving to dismantle those obstacles down."

Additionally, Rosenior will become the fourth permanent English managers presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's other big five divisions regarding national representation.

Sixteen out of twenty first division managers in Serie A are Italian, Eleven in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany and Ten of the 18 in France.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure every aspiring British coaches with a youth development pedigree will be, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is really motivating to young English coaches in the system to witness someone land that job with that profile and everyone hopes he does really well."

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a five-month stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for services rendered to tackling inequality in football and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He began penning a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not influence coaching skill and said roles should be given on merit.

He also made the view he has often stated: that significant lack of diversity results in misunderstandings regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural heritage.

In a podcast for a football podcast, he explained the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "passionate", but said he could relate to the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed coach make a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the top flight's first African heritage manager in Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
